PENEDA - Mountain of Peneda - Zone of
adventure climbing Topos at the bottom of this page
Peneda is in north of Portugal . This is a religious place inside the
Natural Park of Peneda/Gerês.
To go there you must travel to Oporto and then to Valença. Here, look for
the sign indicating Monção/Melgaço and turn, going to Melgaço.
In centre of Melgaço you will find a crossing road with a sign indication
of: " Nossa Senhora da Peneda 27 Km ".
Before you go up to the mountain, visit the village. Take a coffee
and don't buy meal. In the mountain at Srª da Peneda (Meadinha) there are
restaurants.
Photos showing Meadinha (upper) and Zone of Bico do
Patelo near "Lamas de Mouros" Camping Park.
At Lamas de Mouro zone you
will see the sign shown indicating :Peneda 8Km Camping park 1 Km . See map
If you pretend to stay for some days, I recommend
this park, because the free camping is not allowed in all area, unless you get a
special licence from the Natural Park office.
Go more these 8 Km
until you reach the place where is the Church of Nossa Senhora da Peneda .
At the back side on the right of the Church, there is a stone trail to the
climbing walls.
Look for the routes . Is not easy to find them
because they only are equipped at the belay
stations.
There are 4 Climbing Zones in Peneda: Meadinha, Nédia,
Bico do Patelo, and Torre Pequena. The rock is soft granite very good for
adherence climbing. Routes are between 100 meters and 200 meters and are only
equipped at some belay stations. Take some kit of rocks and friends with you.
Route will take between one to seven hours to do ( see topos) CLICK HERE
